How our newsroom works

Start with what it does not cover. Our radio shows do not use AI. Nothing on any JFMN program is written, voiced or produced with it, and nothing published by WV Sports Nation at wvsportsnation.com is either. The written stories on jfmnsports.com are the only place we use it.

For those stories, the model is Claude, a generative AI model made by Anthropic. Here is the process. An editor picks the story and writes a brief. The model reads the source reporting, drafts the story, and then goes back through the draft and checks every name, number and quote against those sources. A second pass reads it for how it sounds. An editor reads the result and decides whether it runs. If nobody decides to publish it, it does not publish.

We are doing this because a small staff can cover more games and more news this way than it could on its own. We are telling you because you should know how something was made before you decide whether to trust it. We believe in transparency, especially when it comes to AI use and ethics. We think AI can do a lot for productivity, efficiency and innovation, and we also think it carries real risks for the country and for the news business, and the only honest way to work with both of those at once is to say plainly what we are doing.

The rules

Every story links to the reporting it is based on, so you can check it yourself. If we cannot trace a fact to a source, it does not go in. We report what happened and what people said. We do not tell you what to think about the athletes, and we keep politics out of it. When we get something wrong, we fix the story and note the correction.

Every story also carries a line at the bottom naming the model that helped write it, with a link back to this page. If a story ever reads like a machine wrote it and nobody looked at it, that is on us, and we want to hear about it.
